“Heal Along Jeonnam’s Autumn Foliage Trails: Nature, Culture, and Cuisine in One”
Jeollanam-do Province is recommending scenic fall travel destinations where visitors can enjoy autumn foliage, nature, and local cuisine all at once.
The top destinations include Suncheon Songgwangsa Temple, Damyang Gwanbangjerim Forest, Gurye Jirisan Piagol Valley, and Jangseong Baekyangsa Temple.
These destinations are beloved for their vibrant autumn colors, tranquil temples, historic forest paths, and rich local foods, offering a romantic and immersive fall travel experience.
Suncheon Songgwangsa Temple – Finding Peace in a Tranquil Temple
The trails of Jogyesan Mountain and the grounds of Songgwangsa Temple are adorned with brilliant red and yellow foliage in autumn.
The stone wall path from Iljumun Gate to the Daeungjeon Hall provides an ideal space for reflection and relaxation.
Known as a filming location for the 2022 Cannes Film Festival Best Director-winning film Decision to Leave, the temple also offers templestay programs, including meditation and tea ceremonies.
Visitors can also enjoy local culinary delights such as jjangttungeo-tang (mudfish soup) from Suncheon Bay and pork soup from the traditional markets of Utjang and Arajang.
Damyang Gwanbangjerim – A Photogenic Forest of National Treasure Status
Stretching over 2 km, the forest features over 200-year-old zelkova, hackberry, cherry, and ginkgo trees, harmoniously aligned with the flowing Damyang Stream.
Designated as a natural monument, the forest was also awarded first place in the “Beautiful Forest National Competition,” drawing photographers and tourists every year.
Travelers can complement the scenic beauty with local cuisine, including Changepyeong Gukbap and traditionally prepared Damyang Tteokgalbi.
Gurye Jirisan Piagol Valley – Walking Through the Three Reds of Autumn
Piagol, nicknamed the “Three Reds” (Sanhong – red mountains, Suhong – red waters, Inhong – red for the people walking through), offers a 4 km autumn foliage trail.
Visitors can experience both the natural ecology of the national park and historical temples such as Yeongoksa, fully immersing themselves in the atmosphere of Jirisan.
Gurye’s local specialties include charcoal-grilled village chicken, freshwater snail sujebi soup, and mountain vegetable set meals, all made with fresh, healthy local ingredients.
Jangseong Baekyangsa Temple – Autumn Foliage Reflected on the Pond
Baekyangsa Temple features young maple trees and the twin-story pavilion Ssanggyeru, whose reflection on the temple pond creates a picturesque scene.
The flat walking path from the temple entrance to its grounds allows visitors of all ages to leisurely enjoy a tunnel of autumn leaves.
Local dishes such as soondae-gukbap, crab soup, spicy freshwater fish soup, and mountain vegetable set meals further enhance the travel experience.
