눈길에서는 요령도, 경험도 통하지 않는다. 무조건 감속, 앞차와 충분한 거리 유지만이 생명을 지키는 해답이다.

교통안전공단은 겨울철 강설과 한파가 예보됨에 따라 눈길 안전운전 교통안전 캠페인을 강화하고, 운전자들의 각별한 주의를 당부했다.

광주·전남 지역은 20일부터 최강 한파가 예보됐으며, 21~22일에는 눈 소식까지 겹칠 전망이다. 기온 하강과 함께 도로 결빙 가능성이 커져, 평소보다 훨씬 높은 사고 위험이 예상된다.

실제 교통사고분석시스템(TAAS) 통계는 눈길의 위험성을 분명히 보여준다.

최근 3년간 눈이 내릴 때 발생한 교통사고는 3,159건, 이로 인한 사망자는 46명으로 집계됐다.
눈이 올 때 치사율은 1.46명으로, 맑은 날 치사율(1.24명)보다 약 1.8배 높다.

눈길 사고는 단순 접촉 사고를 넘어, 곧바로 대형 인명 피해로 이어질 가능성이 크다는 뜻이다.

공단은 겨울철 안전운전의 핵심 수칙으로 앞차와 충분한 안전거리 확보, 급제동·급가속·급핸들 조작 금지, 결빙 구간에서는 절대 감속을 강조했다.

특히 교량, 고가도로, 터널 출입부, 그늘진 도로는 일반 도로보다 먼저 얼어붙는 구간으로, 눈이 내리지 않더라도 미끄럼 사고 위험이 상존한다.

또한 출발 전에는 반드시 기상정보와 도로 상황을 확인하고, 운전 중에도 노면 상태 변화에 각별히 신경 써야 한다.
“평소와 같은 속도”는 겨울철에는 가장 위험한 선택이 될 수 있다.

교통안전공단 관계자는 “눈길에서는 한 번의 방심, 한 번의 급조작이 곧 사고로 이어진다.”며 “눈길에서는 무조건 감속, 거리 유지, 급조작 금지라는 기본 원칙만 지켜도 사고를 크게 줄일 수 있다.”고 강조했다.

겨울 도로 위에서는 서두를 이유가 없다.
조금 늦게 가는 선택이, 가족과 이웃의 내일을 지킨다.
지금 이 순간, 속도를 낮추는 것이 가장 강력한 안전운전이다.

“On Snowy Roads, Unconditional Deceleration Saves Lives”
— Amid forecasts of severe cold and heavy snow, a single lapse can lead to disaster —
On snowy roads, neither skill nor experience can be trusted. Unconditional deceleration and maintaining ample distance from the vehicle ahead are the only answers that protect lives.
The Korea Transportation Safety Authority has strengthened its winter road safety campaign as snowfall and severe cold are forecast, urging drivers to exercise extreme caution. In the Gwangju–Jeonnam region, the coldest wave of the season is expected to begin on the 20th, with snow forecast for the 21st–22nd. As temperatures plunge, the likelihood of road icing will increase sharply, raising accident risks far above normal levels.
Statistics from the Traffic Accident Analysis System (TAAS) clearly demonstrate the danger of snowy conditions. Over the past three years, 3,159 traffic accidents occurred during snowfall, resulting in 46 fatalities. The fatality rate during snowfall is 1.46, approximately 1.8 times higher than on clear days (1.24). This indicates that accidents on snowy roads are far more likely to escalate from minor collisions into serious, life-threatening incidents.
The Authority emphasized key winter driving rules: ▲maintain sufficient following distance ▲avoid sudden braking, rapid acceleration, and abrupt steering ▲reduce speed absolutely on icy sections. In particular, bridges, overpasses, tunnel entrances and exits, and shaded roads tend to freeze earlier than other roads, posing a constant skid risk even when snow is not visibly falling.
Drivers are also advised to check weather forecasts and road conditions before departure, and to remain alert to changing road surfaces while driving. “Driving at your usual speed” can be the most dangerous choice during winter conditions.
An official from the Authority warned, “On snowy roads, a single moment of carelessness or one abrupt maneuver can immediately lead to an accident,” adding, “Simply following the basic principles—slow down without exception, keep your distance, and avoid sudden actions—can significantly reduce accidents.”
There is no reason to rush on winter roads. Choosing to arrive a little later protects the tomorrow of your family and neighbors.
At this very moment, reducing speed is the most powerful form of safe driving.
