Yeongsan River Basin Environmental Office Moves to Expand Reusable Tableware at Public Funeral Halls
Signs agreement with five local governments and six public funeral halls, including those in Jeonnam-Gwangju and Jeju
Partners to develop supply, collection and washing systems and improve recycling practices

The Yeongsan River Basin Environmental Office is working with local governments and funeral halls to reduce the use of disposable items at public funeral facilities.
The office said it signed an agreement on Sept. 29 with five local governments and six public funeral halls to promote the use of reusable tableware.
The participating local governments are Jeonnam-Gwangju Special Self-Governing City, Jeju Special Self-Governing Province, Mokpo City, Namhae County and Hadong County. The participating facilities are Suncheon Medical Center, Seogwipo Medical Center, Mokpo City Medical Center, Namhae Chumonuri Funeral Hall, Changseon Public Funeral Hall and Gojeon Funeral Hall.
Under the agreement, the partners plan to expand the use of reusable tableware in stages and establish systems for its supply, collection and washing. They will also work together to improve the separation of recyclable waste.
The agreement is part of the “Transition Plan for a Plastic-Free Circular Economy,” announced by the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment in April. The environmental office expects that switching to reusable tableware could substantially reduce disposable waste at funeral halls, which receive many visitors over short periods.
“I thank the local governments and public funeral halls for joining this effort despite the practical challenges,” said Kim Young-min, head of the Yeongsan River Basin Environmental Office. “We will continue working with local communities to make the use of reusable tableware part of everyday life.”
