The Yeongsan River Basin Environmental Office held a meeting with the National Institute of Ecology and Jeonnam–Gwangju Integrated Special City to strengthen expertise in environmental impact assessments involving nature and ecology and improve cooperation among the agencies.
The office, headed by Kim Young-min, announced that it hosted the meeting at its headquarters on September 29.
Participants included environmental impact assessment officials from the Yeongsan River Basin Environmental Office and the National Institute of Ecology, as well as representatives of Jeonnam–Gwangju Integrated Special City. Under the Special Act on the Establishment of Jeonnam–Gwangju Integrated Special City, the city assumed responsibility for certain environmental impact assessment duties concerning private-sector projects and other developments in the Jeonnam and Gwangju regions on July 1 this year.
Participants shared environmental impact assessment review cases from specialist institutions in nature and ecology and discussed approaches to reviewing projects affecting migratory bird habitats. Training on the use of ecological and natural maps was also provided, allowing participants to exchange practical experience and explore ways to apply the maps in assessment work.
The agencies also discussed cooperation to reduce the environmental impacts of development projects and strengthen follow-up management. Drawing on actual assessment consultation cases, they examined specific assessment methods that take local conditions into account while supporting sound nature conservation.
Kim said the office would continue communicating with the relevant agencies to improve the efficiency and consistency of environmental impact assessment consultations and strengthen cooperation among consultation authorities.
