[Travel Column]
Starlight Scattered at Yonggungsa, Hearts Embraced by the Sea at Songjeong
— Weaving Memories with My Daughters on Our Second Day in Busan —
On our second day in Busan,
the breeze came out to greet us first.
On the way to Yonggungsa Temple, it gently caught my collar and let it go, telling us that the sea was near. As I matched my steps to my daughters’, our pace grew more leisurely. Feelings usually tucked into brief exchanges of “How are you?” began to lift their heads as we walked together.
Seagulls were flying above Yonggungsa. Their white wings swept slowly across the blue sky. They seemed to be carrying letters written by the sea to some distant place.
Following their wings with my eyes, I caught sight of waves rolling toward the coastal rocks.
The waves came running from the open sea and clasped the rocks in a fierce embrace. Then they released, all at once, the sunlight they had carried in their arms. Shattered droplets leaped into the air and shimmered. Though it was daytime, stars appeared for fleeting moments above the rocks.
The waves breaking against the rocks were fragments of happiness. They scattered like starlight and drifted down before us.
I looked from the waves to my daughters’ faces and back again. I was grateful that we were seeing the same landscape at the same moment. When the spray rose, our eyes rose together; when the waves withdrew, we gazed out to sea as though pausing to catch our breath. The sea spoke without ceasing. We listened to its story without rushing to reply.
When my daughters were little, there were never enough hours in a day. Preoccupied with making a living, I must have let days pass without fully listening to their stories. I could have answered more gently, held their hands a little longer. Thinking of those years, I felt an old regret, long folded away in a corner of my heart, begin to unfold.
Just then, a wave surged high above the rocks. As though it understood my heart, the sea sent us another shower of sparkling droplets. I looked at my daughters standing before me. The years when I guided them by their little hands had passed; now we chose our paths together and shared the scenery. In the breeze at Yonggungsa, those years quietly took a seat beside us.
At Songjeong Beach, the sea was waiting with its arms spread wide. The waves that had clasped the rocks at Yonggungsa spoke here in a softer voice. They approached the sandy shore, wrote white sentences upon it, then erased them as they retreated. Holding the moisture the waves had left behind, the sand glittered in the sunlight.
The sea breeze passed between us. It stirred my daughters’ hair, lingered at my collar, then turned toward the water again. I felt as though it were bringing their hearts to me, little by little. There were feelings I could sense simply by being beside them, without having to ask. Tenderness lived in the steps we adjusted so we could walk together, and in the moments we paused to look at the same view.
My daughters, too, must have daily lives to tend and worries to bear. Through a parent’s eyes, their childhood faces still appear beneath the faces they wear today. Yet they have become adults, shaping lives of their own. Watching them from behind, I felt pride and tenderness wash over me together. As though welcoming those feelings, the sea at Songjeong sent gentle ripples toward our feet.
Lunch was milmyeon at Wongaya. After our time by the sea, a bowl of wheat noodles was a welcome sight. The ordinary act of sitting at the same table and sharing a meal feels especially warm when traveling. The seagulls and sea spray we had seen that morning, and the breeze at Songjeong, seemed to have joined us at the table.
Looking at the long strands of noodles, I thought of the years we had lived through together. Some days had been difficult to untangle; at times, we had failed to understand one another’s hearts. Having come through those years, we were now sharing a meal in Busan. I set my chopsticks down for a moment and looked around at my family’s faces. I wanted to remember this moment for a long time.
At Igidae Coastal Park, the rocks kept their quiet vigil beside the sea. When the waves came, they received them with their whole bodies; when the water withdrew, they offered their wet faces to the sunlight. As we walked along the coast, the sound of the surf stayed close to our footsteps. The breeze went ahead, then returned to give our backs a gentle push.
Now and then, I slowed down to watch my daughters walking. There were many landscapes I wanted to hold in my eyes, but the sight I most wanted to keep was my family walking together beside that sea. When I think back on this day, I suspect I will remember our steps side by side and the breeze brushing their faces before I remember the names of the places.
My dear daughters, how happy I was to walk with you.
I repeated those words silently, again and again, unable to say all that I felt. I hoped Busan’s breeze would carry them to my daughters. It moved back and forth between us, and I stepped forward to walk beside them once more.
The starlight scattered at Yonggungsa remained in my heart, even in Songjeong’s warm breeze. The waves had returned to the sea, but the shimmer we had watched together would shine for a long time in our family’s memories.
