“AI Applied to Island and Coastal Biological Resource Research”…HNIBR Builds Research Support System
303 candidate compounds and 37,625 genes analyzed to establish priorities for eight applications, including hair growth and skin brightening
Senior researcher Kim Tae-su applies “AI Champion Blue” capabilities…Institute plans to link findings with synthetic biology-based mass production research

The Honam National Institute of Biological Resources (HNIBR) has developed an artificial intelligence (AI) research support system to identify promising candidate compounds and related genes from island and coastal biological resources. By connecting the institute’s own data with public biotechnology databases, the system helps prioritize research targets and identify materials with potential for industrial applications.
In a press release issued on October 6, HNIBR, an institution under the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment led by President Park Jin-young, announced that Kim Tae-su, a senior researcher in its Biological Convergence Research Department, received “AI Champion Blue” certification in July. He subsequently applied the capabilities acquired during the certification process to the institute’s research.
The “AI Champion” program, administered by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, certifies practical skills in using AI and data to solve problems at government agencies and public institutions. The “Blue” level recognizes professionals capable of leading AI innovation projects from planning and design through the implementation of working services.
Through collaboration across departments, Kim developed the system by linking institutional data with public biotechnology databases. It supports decisions on which candidate compounds should receive research priority and which genes are likely to be involved in producing those compounds.
In a proof-of-concept study involving the plant known in Korean as Jodo mandunamu, the system analyzed 303 candidate compounds and 37,625 genes. It then ranked candidate compounds and related genes for eight intended applications, including hair growth and skin brightening.
To assess the system’s reliability, the institute tested 23 reference compounds with previously established biological effects. Of these, 22, or 95.7 percent, appeared among the top 20 ranked candidates. This figure indicates how frequently known reference compounds appeared in the system’s priority rankings; it does not represent the demonstrated efficacy of newly identified compounds or their likelihood of successful commercialization.
Island and coastal biological resources have faced barriers to industrial use because obtaining raw materials in large quantities can be difficult. HNIBR plans to use the system to identify promising biological materials and connect the findings with research into synthetic biology-based mass production.
The institute also plans to incorporate its system development experience into AI training for employees and expand the system’s use across island and coastal biological resource research.
President Park Jin-young described the initiative as an example of how an employee’s AI capabilities can help solve practical research problems and strengthen organizational capacity. He said the institute would continue to expand employee-led AI innovation across research and value creation involving island and coastal biological resources.
