“Gwangju Semiconductor Plant to Move Forward as Quickly as Possible”: SK Chairman Chey Tae-won Visits Military Airport Site
Chey and SK hynix executives inspect the proposed site on October 9, stressing cooperation with central and local governments
Initial plan envisages roughly two-thirds the scale of the Yongin project, with potential expansion depending on land availability and demand
Construction could begin ahead of delayed power and water infrastructure

SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won visited the Gwangju military airport site on October 9, 2026, to review plans for semiconductor production facilities in the Honam region and reaffirm his commitment to advancing the project as quickly as possible.
According to an official announcement by SK hynix, Chey toured the military airport, the proposed site for a specialized semiconductor industrial complex, and the ammunition depot area identified as a key candidate for site preparation. He was accompanied by SK hynix CEO Kwak Noh-jung and other senior executives. During the visit, he met with Min Hyung-bae, mayor of the Jeonnam–Gwangju Integrated Special City, and other officials to review industrial complex development plans and preparations for land, power, water and transportation infrastructure.
Chey instructed executives to “work closely with the central and local governments to develop the southwestern semiconductor cluster as swiftly as possible.” The visit underscored the group chairman’s direct involvement in reviewing the proposed production site and his emphasis on cooperation with the relevant authorities.
According to Mokpo MBC, Chey said semiconductor demand was expected to grow rapidly and indicated that the Yongin production facilities alone would be insufficient, making additional capacity necessary.
Regarding the scale of the Gwangju facilities, he said the current plan envisages approximately two-thirds the scale of the Yongin project, with room for expansion if additional land becomes available. He also indicated that plant construction could proceed first even if preparations for power and water supplies were delayed.
His remarks suggest an intention to accelerate the project by carrying out infrastructure development and plant construction in parallel. However, beginning construction ahead of infrastructure completion would still require the necessary power and water supply systems to be in place before production could start.
While the site visit and official announcement confirmed Chey’s commitment to moving the project forward swiftly, neither provided a new, specific construction start date or final investment amount. Securing land, obtaining permits and approvals, developing infrastructure and finalizing detailed investment plans remain key steps toward implementation.
