더불어민주당 전남·광주통합특별시장 후보로 선출된 민형배 국회의원(광주 광산구을)이 세월호 참사 12주기를 맞아 광주와 목포에서 열린 ‘기억식’에 참석하며 희생자들을 기리고 기억과 책임의 의미를 되새겼다.
민 후보는 16일 오전 광주 광산구 풍영정천 천변공원 ‘기억의 공간’에서 열린 수완지구 기억식과, 오후 목포신항에서 진행된 기억식에 잇따라 참석했다. 이날 행보는 단순한 추모를 넘어 지역 공동체와 함께 ‘기억의 지속’을 확인하는 자리로 이어졌다.

광주 수완지구에서 수완마을촛불모임 주관으로 열린 기억식은 ‘열두 번째 봄, 기억은 멈추지 않습니다’를 주제로 진행됐다. 시민들이 직접 참여한 ‘노란리본 작성’과 ‘기억의 돌 만들기’ 프로그램, 시 낭독과 추모 노래가 이어지며 현장은 깊은 애도의 분위기로 채워졌다.

이 자리에서 민 후보는 “그날의 슬픔을 기억하고, 그날의 분노 역시 여전히 남아 있다”고 밝히며 신경림 시인의 시를 인용해 “우리 곁에 머물고 있는 아름다운 영혼들이 고통을 이겨내고 다시 꽃으로 피어나길 바란다”고 말했다.
특히 이날 행사가 열린 ‘기억의 공간’은 민 후보가 광산구청장 재임 시절 ‘기억의 나무’ 식수를 계기로 조성된 장소라는 점에서 의미를 더했다.

행사를 주관한 이진숙 수완마을촛불모임 대표는 “세월호 이후 마을 공동체가 기억과 연대를 이어오는 과정에서 당시 광산구의 지원이 큰 힘이 됐다”며 “이곳은 전국적으로도 드문 지속형 추모 공간으로 자리잡았다.”고 평가했다.
오후 목포신항에서 열린 기억식에서 민 후보는 별도의 발언 없이 뒤편에서 조용히 참관했다.
그는 참석자들과 함께 노란 종이비행기를 날리는 추모 퍼포먼스에 참여하고, 헌화로 희생자들을 기리며 끝까지 자리를 지켰다.

정치적 메시지보다 ‘기억과 책임’의 의미를 강조한 이날 행보는, 세월호 참사가 여전히 현재진행형의 사회적 과제임을 환기시키는 자리로 남았다.

Min Hyung-bae, a member of the National Assembly (Gwangju Gwangsan-eul) and the Democratic Party’s candidate for the integrated Jeonnam–Gwangju Special Metropolitan City, attended memorial events in Gwangju and Mokpo on April 16, marking the 12th anniversary of the Sewol ferry disaster. He paid tribute to the victims and reflected on the meaning of remembrance and responsibility.
On this day, Min attended a memorial ceremony in the morning at the “Space of Memory” along the Pungyeongjeongcheon stream in Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju, and later in the afternoon at Mokpo New Port. His participation went beyond a simple tribute, serving as an opportunity to reaffirm the continuity of remembrance together with local communities.
The Gwangju Suwan District memorial, organized by the Suwan Candlelight Community Group, was held under the theme “The Twelfth Spring, Memory Does Not Stop.” The event featured citizen participation programs such as writing yellow ribbons and creating “memory stones,” along with poetry readings and memorial songs, creating an atmosphere of deep mourning.
At the event, Min stated, “We remember the sorrow of that day, and the anger from that day still remains.” Quoting poet Shin Kyung-rim, he added, “I hope the beautiful souls who remain with us will overcome their suffering and bloom again like flowers.”
The “Space of Memory,” where the ceremony was held, carries added significance as it was established during Min’s tenure as Gwangsan District Mayor, beginning with the planting of a “Tree of Memory.”
Lee Jin-sook, head of the Suwan Candlelight Community Group, said, “The support from Gwangsan District at the time was a great strength as our community continued remembrance and solidarity activities after the Sewol disaster,” adding, “This has become one of the few sustained memorial spaces in the country.”
At the Mokpo New Port ceremony in the afternoon, Min quietly observed from the back without delivering a speech. He joined participants in a memorial performance by flying yellow paper airplanes and paid his respects by laying flowers, remaining until the end.
By emphasizing remembrance and responsibility over political messaging, Min’s actions on this day served as a reminder that the Sewol ferry disaster remains an ongoing social issue.
