Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) is stepping up efforts to ensure a stable electricity supply during the Chuseok holiday by completing special inspections of traditional markets and major power facilities nationwide and mobilizing approximately 3,000 emergency personnel each day throughout the holiday period.
KEPCO, headed by President and CEO Kim Dong-cheol, announced on Sept. 23 that it has carried out special inspections and reinforcement of key power facilities and will operate a 24-hour emergency response system to minimize inconvenience to the public during the Chuseok holiday.
Since June, KEPCO has strengthened inspections and diagnostics of major power facilities in preparation for equipment stress caused by the summer heat wave.
In particular, the company designated Sept. 10 through Sept. 23 as a special inspection period ahead of the Chuseok holiday, conducting intensive inspections and reinforcement work on major power facilities across the country.
As part of the special inspection program, KEPCO examined 4,421 distribution lines that had accumulated stress from the prolonged summer heat, as well as 4,468 overloaded service lines.
The company also completed inspections and reinforcement of power supply facilities serving 2,029 traditional markets nationwide, where visitor numbers are expected to increase during the holiday.
KEPCO also reorganized its emergency restoration support system to ensure a rapid response in the event of large-scale power outages at apartment complexes.
Special inspections were also conducted on transmission and substation facilities connected to renewable energy-intensive areas and power plants.
KEPCO deployed advanced diagnostic equipment at 452 transmission and substation facilities to check for gas leaks and conduct thermal imaging inspections.
The company also completed detailed inspections of fire protection systems and vulnerable equipment at 68 substations located near heavily used urban facilities and 140 associated transmission lines.
Following these preventive inspections, KEPCO plans to maintain its emergency response system throughout the Chuseok holiday by deploying approximately 3,000 personnel each day in cooperation with its partner companies.
In particular, KEPCO will provide round-the-clock emergency support for failures involving customer-owned electrical facilities, including those at apartment complexes. Emergency generators, mobile transformers and temporary power supply equipment will be deployed when necessary to support rapid restoration.
Jung Chi-kyo, KEPCO’s Executive Vice President for Safety, Sales and Distribution, and Kim Jae-gun, Executive Vice President for Power Grid Operations, also visited traditional markets and major substations to personally inspect preparations for a stable power supply during the holiday.
They urged personnel at the sites to make every effort to ensure an uninterrupted electricity supply and a prompt emergency response so that customers do not experience inconvenience during the Chuseok holiday.
Customers experiencing power outages or other electricity-related problems during the holiday can contact KEPCO’s customer service center by dialing 123 without an area code.
KEPCO will operate its customer service center and field emergency response teams around the clock during the holiday, dispatching personnel immediately upon receiving reports and providing prompt assistance to resolve electricity-related problems.
A KEPCO official said, “We have completed advance inspections and reinforcement of major power facilities so that the public can use electricity with confidence during the Chuseok holiday. We will continue to maintain our emergency response system throughout the holiday and make every effort to ensure a stable electricity supply.”
