Autumn calls out the names of old friends, one by one. At its call, the childhood years tucked deep within hearts busy with everyday life awaken, and faded memories take a seat by the classroom window, waiting for us.
Members of the 65th graduating class of Haenam Dong Elementary School in Haenam-eup, Haenam County, will gather for their regular reunion at Donilchon in Gwangju at 6 p.m. on October 8. It will be a time to ask after one another, share memories of growing up together, and renew a friendship that has endured through the years.
When we softly speak a friend’s name, long-forgotten scenes answer first. The dust of the school playground remembers our running footsteps, while the old classroom desks cradle the faces that once sat side by side, laughing. The eagerness for lessons to end and the laughter that filled each break bring the school grounds to life again in our memories.
The picnic paths to Geumganggol, Hakdong, and Daeheungsa Temple are waiting for their old friends, too. On the night before a school outing, excitement would sit beside our pillows, keeping sleep at bay. When morning came, little footsteps gathered, lunchboxes in hand, and the roadside grasses and trees nodded along with the children’s chatter.
What could we have talked about so endlessly along those paths? We opened our lunchboxes, peeked at our friends’ side dishes, and laughed long and hard at the smallest remark. Today, when we recall those days, our friends’ faces come into view before the scenery does. Memory has kept those faces safe all these years.
“How we miss you, dear friends. How we miss you still.”
These words hold the joy we never quite expressed and the longing to see one another again. Even when we could not meet often, friendship kept a small light burning in a corner of our hearts. On difficult days, it offered us laughter from childhood; on lonely days, it quietly unfolded the picnic paths we once walked together.
At this gathering, friends will look upon the years etched into one another’s faces and listen to the stories of their lives. The moment a familiar voice is recognized and a name is called, joy will rise first to clasp a hand. The playful spirit and laughter of childhood will follow, slowly finding their way home.
“How have you been?” is a brief greeting, yet it carries so many years within it. How has life treated you? Have you been keeping well? Has anything been weighing on your heart? The questions we cannot fully put into words linger in the eyes with which we look at an old friend.
Then, when someone asks, “Do you remember back then?” memory pulls up a chair and joins the table. The paths to Geumganggol, Hakdong, and Daeheungsa Temple unfold between the stories, and the children we once were walk them together again.
This autumn reunion of Haenam Dong Elementary School’s 65th graduating class will be an occasion to tenderly embrace the years gone by and rediscover the preciousness of the friends beside us today. May the parting words, “Stay well. Let’s meet again,” remain a warm promise that watches over each friend’s tomorrow.
Even as time traveled its long road, friendship was waiting where we had always called out to one another.
