“From Flood Recovery to Island Power Supply”: KEPCO President Kim Dong-cheol Conducts On-Site Inspections
Checks power restoration and temporary supply arrangements in Geoje, hears residents’ concerns on Baengnyeong Island
Reviews offshore wind development in Sinan, emphasizes disaster response and worker safety

Kim Dong-cheol, president of Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO), visited flood-hit areas in Geoje, South Gyeongsang Province, island communities including Baengnyeong Island, and an offshore wind project site in Sinan to inspect power supply conditions, disaster response systems, and progress on new energy projects.
In a press release issued on October 1, KEPCO said Kim visited areas affected by extreme rainfall in Geoje on September 28 to check the restoration of power facilities and temporary electricity supply arrangements.
Record-breaking rainfall in Geoje in August caused 203 cases of damage to power facilities, including utility poles, power lines, and transformers, and left 2,504 households without electricity. According to KEPCO, emergency repair crews and backup equipment restored power to 97 percent of affected households within one day.
During the visit, Kim reviewed restoration progress and response readiness aimed at minimizing inconvenience to customers. He also inspected the condition of distribution towers carrying power lines across the sea between nearby islands and the mainland, checking for vulnerabilities to natural disasters. He then met employees at KEPCO’s Geoje branch to hear suggestions arising from the recovery work and proposals to improve worker safety.
The visit followed inspections in Yeosu, Baengnyeong, and Sinan during September. In island communities including Baengnyeong Island, Kim examined how geographical conditions affect facility maintenance and emergency repairs. He also heard residents’ concerns about electricity services and employees’ suggestions on workplace safety.
At the offshore wind project site in Sinan, Kim reviewed development progress. He emphasized that KEPCO, as a public enterprise, should play a catalytic role in building the offshore wind industry ecosystem and expanding the use of domestic energy resources.
KEPCO said it maintains annual outage duration per household in the nine-minute range and transmission and distribution losses at 3.5 percent. However, the press release did not specify the reference year for these figures or provide international comparison data.
KEPCO plans to use the feedback gathered during the visits to address residents’ concerns, strengthen disaster response systems, and improve worker safety management. It also intends to advance major projects, including offshore wind development, to expand the foundation for future energy supply.
“Ensuring that people in disaster-hit areas, on islands, and in remote communities can use electricity with confidence is KEPCO’s fundamental responsibility,” Kim said. “We will pay close attention to the difficulties people face and address problems on the ground, with worker safety as our highest priority.”
