Artworks created with the participation of students from special-education classes in the Jeonnam-Gwangju region are being presented to the public as part of an exhibition themed around island biodiversity and climate change.
The Honam National Institute of Biological Resources (HNIBR), under the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment and headed by President Park Jin-young, announced that it will hold a special event on Sept. 29 for students who participated in the exhibition, “Stories of Island Biodiversity and Climate Change.”
The exhibition is notable for incorporating works created by students from special-education classes at local high schools into actual exhibition content.
The participating students will have an opportunity to see their own works displayed in the exhibition and experience the entire process from creation to public presentation.
HNIBR explained that the event was designed to allow the students to go beyond simply creating artworks and experience the sense of accomplishment and significance that comes from seeing their work become part of a real exhibition.
The special event will feature a range of programs for the participating students, including exhibition-linked activities, an introduction to the special exhibition and tactile experiences.
Souvenirs featuring the students’ artworks will also be provided, giving participants an opportunity to commemorate their involvement and share the experience with others.
The exhibition and special event were organized to expand opportunities for adolescents with developmental disabilities to participate in cultural and exhibition activities, while also sharing the importance of climate change awareness and island and coastal biodiversity with the local community.
By allowing students to explore biological resources and climate change through creative activities and exhibition experiences, the program is also intended to make environmental issues and biodiversity more accessible and engaging.
HNIBR plans to continue expanding community-linked programs as part of its ESG management efforts and its commitment to strengthening the social value of public institutions.
“The experience of seeing artworks created by the students become part of an actual exhibition, and then encountering those works in the exhibition space, is particularly meaningful,” Park Jin-young, President of HNIBR, said. “We will continue to create exhibition opportunities that enable people from diverse backgrounds to experience and engage with biodiversity in a more accessible and familiar way.”
