[Travel Column]
Weaving a Happy Life, One Moment at a Time
— The Day Busan’s Breeze Carried My Daughters’ Love to Me —
On the road to Busan, autumn gently rested its face against the car window.
The roadside trees waved their branches to see us off, while the wide sky made room for us, as if to say we could lay our cares aside for a day.
My second daughter and my son-in-law were with me on this journey.
As I gazed out the window, I found myself turning toward them. Already, there was something dear and familiar about the sights we would share that day.
Once, I held my daughters’ little hands as we crossed the street. Those were the days when I kept looking back, afraid of losing their grasp. Now I travel to an unfamiliar city beside my grown daughter and her husband. When had time slipped between us and quietly changed our places? The hand that once enclosed hers has gathered deeper wrinkles, and that little girl has become someone who knows how to make memories with a parent.
Busan offered its first greeting with a warm seed-filled hotteok.
Sweetness spread across my tongue, and the seeds opened the door to our day with their nutty crunch. The warmth reaching my fingertips was welcome. Sharing a hotteok beside my daughter and son-in-law, I felt my heart loosen, too. Even a simple snack becomes a taste we remember when we share it with someone dear.
Next came Kkangdwaehu, its unfamiliar name catching hold of our curiosity.
A single bite, a brief glance at one another, and laughter blossomed. That laughter passed among us before running ahead into Busan’s alleyways. Our journey gathered up these little tastes and expressions, writing its own story as we went.
As we entered Bupyeong Market, the alleyways opened their arms.
The aromas drifting from the shops tugged at our sleeves, while voices flowed past, shoulder to shoulder. The market busily unfolded its life before us. Within that bustle were hardworking hands and the hopes of people earning their daily living.
I walked those lanes with my daughter and son-in-law.
Whenever something caught our eye, we slowed our steps; before the food stalls, we chose together what we would like to try. For once, time did not hurry us along. It seemed to stroll beside us, listening to our conversation and stopping whenever we stopped.
How often, in all my years, had time felt so generous? There had always been tasks calling me first, and the day would fade before I had a chance to look back. Yet here, walking a single alley beside my daughter and son-in-law became a precious part of the day.
At Dadaepo, the sea recognized us from afar and beckoned.
The pine grove spread its shade for us first. Each time the breeze passed through the branches, it whispered something in a low voice. Beneath those trees, I slowed my steps. Even the thoughts that had long clung to my heart seemed to lean against the trunks and rest.
Beyond the pine grove, the sand was soft and fine.
The little grains shifted gently beneath our feet, making room for every step.
When I left a footprint and looked back, the sand was holding that fleeting trace with tender care.
Walking there, I thought of my daughters’ childhood.
Little feet following behind me; faces that were always close whenever I turned around. There had been so many days when the demands of making a living kept me from giving them the attention they deserved.
I had always held them in my heart, but the moments when I failed to show that love remain tucked into a corner of the years.
The waves came toward us, then withdrew. The words I had never spoken stirred inside my chest with the water.
Thank you for growing up so well.
Thank you for being here with me.
My daughter and son-in-law stood beside me.
Looking out at the sea, I lingered in that gratitude. Each time Dadaepo’s breeze brushed my face, the words within me softened a little. How fortunate I was to have this time to walk beside them now.
In the evening, my third daughter joined us with my two grandchildren.
Joy rose from its seat before anyone else.
With the children’s arrival, the day found fresh life. Their voices skipped around the dinner table, and laughter settled, one by one, on the adults’ faces. Even the tiredness I had felt a moment earlier stepped aside and sat down.
As I ate with my daughters, I watched my grandchildren.
Where my little girls had once sat, their children were now sitting with us. These were the faces the passing years had given our family. When I looked from a child to my daughter, long ago and today quietly clasped hands across the same table.
After dinner, my eldest daughter joined us, too.
At the sight of her face, a space within my heart lit up.
The day had begun with my second daughter and son-in-law; now my third daughter, my grandchildren, and my eldest daughter had joined us in turn. With each arrival, the evening opened its embrace a little wider.
Within that generous embrace, I looked at my daughters’ faces, one by one.
My daughters, who had made time in their own busy lives to be here. My son-in-law, who shared the day with me. My grandchildren, who filled it with life. “Thank you” was brief, but the feeling behind it went on and on.
Time had changed so much. My daughters had grown, and I had grown older. Yet as we sat looking at one another, the years behind us no longer seemed so distant. The laughter of my little girls, and the younger days I had spent raising them, had drawn close to our table that evening.
That night, we looked out over Busan’s lights from Hwangnyeongsan.
The mountain stood quietly in the darkness, showing us the city. Busan, so busy by day, lit countless lamps and began telling its nighttime stories. The lights stretching into the distance seemed to keep watch over someone’s day. Somewhere beneath them, a meal would be set on a table, a long-awaited person would be coming home, and a child would be drifting off to sleep.
Beside me, looking out at that city, was my own family.
The day I had shared with my daughters, son-in-law, and grandchildren slowly took shape in the night breeze. The warmth of the hotteok, the voices of Bupyeong Market, the shade of Dadaepo’s pines, and the touch of its fine sand returned, one after another. Each memory brought a family face with it and sat down in my heart.
My dear daughters.
Even without speaking, I kept calling to you within.
When you were little, I worried so much about tomorrow that I could not fully cherish today. Now, receiving a day like this from you, I hear a gentle answer to the life I have lived.
A day when my son-in-law walked beside me, my daughters gathered one by one, and my grandchildren added their laughter. Those little bursts of laughter seeped into the folds the years had left within my heart.
Someday, the feel of the sand may grow faint, and I may forget the order of the market lanes. But I think I will long remember how my heart brightened with each family member’s arrival. The moments when we called one another’s names and met face to face hold a warmth that time cannot easily erase.
Busan’s night breeze passed beside us. I hoped it would not carry the day’s laughter far away. I wished that laughter would stay in a corner of my heart all the way home, and through the ordinary days that would follow.
Weaving a happy life, one moment at a time.
That day, my daughter and son-in-law embroidered memories on the fabric of a single day, and my grandchildren stitched bright laughter between them. I linger over that warm day, quietly imagining the days we have yet to walk together.
