Deepening Our Happiness with Every Step, Lighting Our Family’s Tomorrow at the Lighthouse
— The Third Day of Our Busan Journey, Walking as One with My Daughter, Son-in-Law, and Grandchild —
On the third day of our Busan journey, the breeze of Yeongdo came out to greet our family first. It gently stirred our collars and brushed back our hair, letting us know the sea was near. My daughter, son-in-law, and grandchild were beside me. Each new scene brought anticipation to their faces. Watching their expressions, I began slowly gathering this final day of our trip into my heart.
As we entered Huinnyeoul Culture Village, the sea peeked out from the end of an alley. The blue hidden between low walls and houses widened with every step. The sky gently drew its clouds aside to reveal the water, while sunlight laid a warm hand upon the path ahead.
My daughter’s gaze followed wherever my grandchild looked. My son-in-law stayed close, mindful of everyone’s pace, and I matched my steps to theirs. Leaves beyond a wall, birds flying over the sea, waves breaking white against the rocks—each caught the child’s curiosity. Following that gaze, we too began stopping before small wonders.
A bird traced a slender path across the sky. When the child looked up, we adults raised our eyes as well. One small spark of curiosity drew the whole family’s attention in the same direction. As though it had noticed that moment, the breeze passed softly among us.
Carrying the welcoming alleys of Huinnyeoul in our hearts, we headed to Taejongdae. There, the trees caught the wind and waved their leaves. When the breeze spoke through the branches, the forest answered in a low murmur. Whenever our conversation quieted, birdsong reached us, and the distant sound of waves lent ease to our steps.
Along the path from the Taejongdae observation deck toward the lighthouse, we came closer to the sea. The sweeping view we had admired from above took on a different expression as we walked. Our eyes wandered over the distant blue, then returned to the path and stairs beneath our feet. The sea kept telling its stories beside us, and the way to the lighthouse slowly brought our family closer to its voice.
Walking together for about sixty minutes, we learned one another’s pace.
Those ahead turned to look back, and those behind caught up beside them. When my grandchild paused, the adults paused too. If someone turned to admire the sea, the rest of us followed their gaze. As the child’s short steps and the adults’ longer strides gradually found a shared rhythm, our family began walking as one.
My son-in-law added laughter to my daughter’s stories, and my grandchild’s voice slipped between them. I smiled as I looked at the child’s face. The everyday questions we might ordinarily exchange in a brief phone call became longer conversations along the path. Walking together, we had no reason to hurry toward the next word.
On the stairs leading to the lighthouse, our care for one another became clearer. Whoever stepped ahead looked back, while those behind watched the movements of the person in front. I walked carefully, one step at a time. Whenever I paused to catch my breath and raised my head, a familiar face was waiting.
I was grateful for those watchful eyes.
Happiness grew firmer with every step. On one stair lay patience; on the next, consideration. Along that path, small acts of care gathered, one upon another, as we watched our footing without forgetting each other. Walking slowly allowed me to linger over my daughter’s expression, notice my son-in-law’s kindness, and share a smile at my grandchild’s smallest gestures.
When my daughter was young, I was the one who watched her steps. I followed, worried she might fall, and held her hand when she grew tired. Now she was caring for her own child while looking back to check on me. My son-in-law, too, naturally kept an eye on the family ahead and behind.
Watching them reassured me. The way my daughter and son-in-law cared for their child carried the quiet understanding built through everyday life. Without long explanations, they recognized when each other was needed. Walking beside them, I felt the warmth of the home my daughter was making.
My grandchild brought laughter into our midst. Whenever the child’s face brightened, the adults’ faces brightened too. That laughter was like little patches of sunlight resting on the path. We gathered them into our hearts as we walked toward the lighthouse.
With every step, happiness ripened.
Like fruit growing sweet from within under the sun, our time together deepened its warmth inside us. My daughter’s voice became woven into the blue of the sea, and the breeze carried my son-in-law’s laughter. My grandchild’s footsteps gave life to every moment. I knew that whenever I recalled this scenery, their faces would return with it.
At the end of the path beyond the observation deck, I looked at the lighthouse. My eyes lingered on its steady presence facing the open sea. Even as the wind shook it and the waves raised their voices below, the lighthouse stood looking toward the distant waters.
Suddenly, I thought of our family’s future.
The days my daughter and son-in-law would cross together, the world my grandchild would discover while growing up, and the road I would walk as I grew older stretched before us like that sea. There would be clear, calm days, but also days when the way ahead blurred and our hearts wavered. I hoped that in those moments, we would have a light to look toward again.
The lighthouse seemed to become a guiding beacon, illuminating our family’s future.
Thinking of that light, I remembered the small kindnesses we had shared along the way: waiting for slower footsteps, listening patiently until a child finished speaking, noticing one another’s tiredness. Such gestures would gather into a light our family could turn toward.
I hoped that light would remain beside my grandchild when the time came to venture farther into the world. May it offer courage at the beginning of a new path, and the memory of a welcoming embrace when weariness came. I also hoped my daughter and son-in-law would often pause amid their busy lives to look at each other, and continue walking together in the direction they had chosen.
I, too, wanted to remain someone my family could turn to when they needed me. I wanted to listen closely, share their laughter on happy days, and stay beside them through difficult ones. That wish, held before the lighthouse, became a quiet prayer offered to the boundless sea.
The sea received our family’s happiness into its wide embrace. Waves came from afar, touched the rocks, dissolved into white foam, and returned. Sunlight shimmered in tiny fragments upon the water. As we stood side by side watching that light, the regrets I had carried for so long softened a little.
Busan Harbor Bridge brought a different feeling. The height of the bridge and the sea spread beneath it sent a sudden flutter through my chest. My gaze, which had reached into the distance, returned to the family close beside me. Their familiar voices and laughter slowly eased the tension.
Stretching its long body across the sea, the bridge carried us toward the next part of our journey. As we crossed, I remembered the lighthouse we had just seen. Unfamiliar, dizzying moments would come again in life. Yet I felt that if we continued looking out for one another and listening as we had that day, we would be able to steady our hearts once more.
When the journey ended, we would each return to our daily lives. My daughter and son-in-law would care for their child and tend to their home, and my grandchild would grow a little more. I, too, would live each day in my own place. Still, the path beyond the Taejongdae observation deck toward the lighthouse, and the faces that waited for me on the stairs, would remain in my heart.
In those sixty minutes of walking, three generations wove happiness together with one heart. The sky opened its broad embrace, and the trees tucked our laughter among their leaves. Birds drew our eyes toward the distance, while the wind and waves received our family’s stories.
With every step, happiness ripened; with every stair, our love grew stronger.
At the end of that path, the lighthouse stood quietly, inviting us to think of the tomorrow we would walk toward together.
I looked once more at my daughter, son-in-law, and grandchild. The joy of our journey still shone in their eyes. Whenever the road ahead grows unclear, I will remember those faces. The time we spent walking and waiting for one another will light our family’s guiding beacon once again.
